The smell of Martinez / Avon? Hmmmm. We could advise the player not to bathe for a week and then the night before have a meal of beans w/ a huge amount a garlic bread. That should approximate Martinez rather well, I would think.
An old Bill Cosby routine:
Bill (to hot date): Uhhh, that's from the, um, refinery.
Hot Date: I certainly hope so.
When I first lived in the Bay Area it was near Martinez. Some winter days the fog would rise up out of the delta and spill over the hills to where I lived. You could hardly see 20 feet. And with the fog was the smell. Phew. I worked w/ a whole bunch of old guys who had spent their whole life there... a lot of old Italian guys. Sons of sardine fisherman for the most part. What a bunch they were, oh lordy, funny, and coarse.... about a quarter of their vocabulary was an obscentity.

Yeah, yeah, it's called sarcasm... The smell of petroleum isn't too bad, and smelling diesel for a long time does get neausating.

The track is laid from the ferry slips on the Oakland Mole to Elvas Tower in Sacramento.
What's been holding things up have been the huge number of buildings to make. There are already over 300 entries in the routes' .ref file for "Cal-P_Bldgs". A majority of those are not individual buildings but groups, often whole city blocks, so the actual number of individual buildings in probably somewhere between 500 and 1000. And there is plenty of that sort of work still to do.
FWIW, anybody who likes to work w/ google's Sketchup and is interested in helping me out doing these structures, please drop me a PM. I really could use some help.

Industrial structures. I'm using Sanborn maps so almost all of them are based on the actual buildings at that location for dates between 1939 and 1952. Fortunately for me, many of the sites are still standing so I've been able to suplement the Sanborn map data w/ a variety of photos.

Real life and a few hardware issues on the parts of most whom are workng on the project has delayed us for the last two months. As of yesterday, half of the team has reported in and we should start seeing some progress

Dude,
do you know I almost gave up on that route??? THIS must be one of those routes I eagerly await yet don't talk about every day because you simply do not hear much about them (no pun intended).
Seriously guys, awesome work. As Dave, I'll be right in line when you guys actually come out with it!

EDIT: Mixed up names...

I have to agree with you on this. I really need a route that is close to me (Davis).
So anymore updates on the progress?

I have been following the progress on this route for several years. I spent my teen years in the Bay Area and rode various trains from Oakland (Mole and 16th Street) to Sacramento, including the RDC.
I also made several trips on the San Joaquin Daylight, and one on the overnight trail (Owl?) I am eagerly awaiting its release; I'll be near the head of the line.

I needed a break and stopped work for a couple of months. Have returned to work but am not entirely sure how much work will get done before another break is called for. I have been at this a
very long time and as far as hobbies go, the bloom is pretty much off the rose.

Dear David Nelson,
I can understand your approach to the project as this is a hobby. In Model Railroad magazine many of the train layouts have taken years to complete. We are lucky to be in a hobby that these layouts can actually be shared with others.
Yours truly,
Leland

Davis, and I was born in Sacramento...I call the Valley my 'turf'. By the way, what is the progress report for the SLW's California Pacific Route, and do you need a hand? My route development skills are in order, and I think you guys could use someone who lives on the northeast end of the route, say for model development or research? How bout it, as my original SERA Woodland Branch is on hold while I re-marker that route.
