A few shots of winter on the A&O with a slight difference...

So what's different?
august1929
Ah hah...
august1929
The trees, needless to say...

The effect isn't bad, could maybe do with a bit more brown.

But overall it seems ok,

especially when it is snowing.

I agree. It looks quite a bit better. Not that it was bad in the first place. Great photos too. You sure do like snow! wink.gif But I do too, for photography. Things seem to contrast better.

A really great wintery mood in those shots!
#3 and #4 look so cold!!! Brrrrrrrr!!!!

Rod,

Those are truly amazing. You have the knack for catching things so perfectly, so realistically. As an example of how very good your photos are, here is the real thing. Except for the snow on the lines, you have been able to capture just about every other aspect of a scene like this. Excellent, truly excellent!!

Thanks guys - Paul, those are truly amazing shots, especially that first - I have saved them both.

Tim, on the like snow point, I think there are several reasons for that, to do with the real and the virtual world;

On the real world, There has never been enough snow in this country, wherever I lived, to satisfy the child that was and remains. In addition, the majority of my active interests have been to do with the outdoors and mountains, caving (spelunking), climbing and walking. Snow has always given that added dimension that moves the normal into the fantasy. Yes, I admit it, I prefer living in a fantasy world.

On the virtual world (the perfect fantasy world), the winter textures are those (understandably), that get less work. For me, however, for an all year round route to be totally immersive, I need to know that when I fire up winter, that is what I am going to have - hence all the fiddling around I have been doing in Andre's and Rich's routes.

This is not intended, in any way, as a criticism of the routes - all who have read my posts and seen my screenshots will know what my feelings are with regard to the work done on all of the relevant routes (including Rich's freeware EMRR & Ohio - Ohio is still visually stunning in the winter). Their enormous amount of work has just made it possible for me to customise my own installation, and bring it round to the precise way that I would want it (the only trouble is, Rich keeps updating Canton - I will be glad when he is finished and my "tweaks" don't have to be constantly redone!).

So why do I want it that way - well this goes back to a dimly remembered "vision" from my childhood, when I was probably about 5 or 6 years old. My father had bought one of the rarely seen Model Railroader magazines, and within that December issue, there was a shot of an O Gauge crossing, lit up at night, in winter, with fake snow. The image of that has stayed with me for the last 47 years, and winter, on model railroads, has always had that special attraction - too complex to permanently model in OO/HO or anything smaller, but so easy in V Scale!

Paul, that first shot, although not of a crossing, has taken me right back to that memory - thank you for that.

Rod:

That looks really, really nice. Are those additional tree shapes/textures... or reworks of the ones I supplied?

Nice!

Andre

Andre, thanks for that - they are reworks, to a point. I have mailed you about them.

Following on from the above, I have transferred the textures to a clean installation of the StL&NA.

I have yet to reletter the PO&N snowplow...

A few more, a bit down the line to Kings River.

Rod,

Shot #3 of the second series has almost an oil painting feel to it. Sort of like the oils of old scenes I see from time to time. Good, very, very good!! wink.gif tongue.gif biggrin.gif
