Update 2/19/05:

The new computer is on hand. I hope to have the time needed (I suspect a full day) sometime next week to get it set up, install all the tools/programs my work and MSTS requires, install the many gigabytes of MSTS projects folders from the portable hard drive, as well as getting it linked it to this computer via the network router I have also purchased.

Once all the above is done, it will be back to work on MSTS projects!

If you can get all that done in a day, Andre, come on out to North Carolina! There's tons o' work waiting for you!

Your little list seems to be stuff that the "professional" computer support staff can't get done in weeks! tongue.gif

Paul:

As is typical for me, I buy my computers right beneath "cutting edge" to save money. Thus, here's what I have:

AMD 3200 XP CPU
1 Gb RAM
160 Gb Western Digital 7200 RPM Hard Drive
DVD+RW Plextor DVD/CD burner
54x CD reader
Gigabyte VIAKT600 mother board
Nvidia GeForce 5750 w/128 meg vid Ram (Temporaryily have a 5200 installed until the correct board is received.)

The HD is hooked up for serial operation in case I want to go with a dual hard drive arrangement later. I also purchased an optical mouse for easier mousing when in CAD, etc. (No roller ball.) Later I will add a sound card and disable the Intel onboard sound. However, I didn't know what sound card I wanted, so passed on spending money in the dark until I do know.

Andre,

I was just wondering because the computer I had to have built back in September has the following specs:

Intel 915 pci express mother board
P4 3.2 gh. processor
1 gh. 533 MHz dual channel ram
navidia 5750 128 MB vid. card
Seagate 120 gb 7200 HD partitioned to two drives
Maxtor 120 gb 7200 HD
52x32x52 CD-rw drive
16x DVD drive
Logitech optical wheel mouse (for CAD & Graphics)
Sound blaster Audigy 2(D) sound card from my old computer

erdnA,

Not saying either is better than the other. I do know that mine runs the sim much better than the old one so you shouldn't have any problems during route creation. All, in all, I would say you got yourself a real good machine for what you need it for. wink.gif

Nice rig you got there Andre. I have just got a 3000xp to upgrade mine with. I am currently using a 2100xp.

I suspect it may take a bit longer than a day to get all of your stuff transferred and working though.

Hi

That's a good average system Andre. Most of your customers will have something like that. I know I do. smile.gif

You mite want to keep your old computer & network it with the new one. I use an older 1900XP system to do my editing, then copy the files to my newer system with MSTS running to see the results. This also makes it less likely that I would lose data since it is on 2 computers.

Have fun.

Hi Bryan:

Yup, I intend to network the two (already have the router), and in addition I have a 120 GB portable hard drive for data storage/back up.

Once up and functioning, I also intend to do some severe housecleaning on this old machine and see if I can lose about 10-15 GB's of various "junk" that's on it.

Hi

Sound like a solid setup. No more worries about losing data. smile.gif

Andre;
Which Router did you get?
I got a Linksys 802.11g, w/ wireless adapter for my Notebook.
My old HP Clunker (600 MHz P3, Win98) that I haven't used for a couple years
is now connected to one of the Router's Ethernet Port to share all it's drives on the LAN.
So now I can back everything up on the HP's HD, and use it's CD Burner from the Notebook.
No more Floppy disc backups!!!! biggrin.gif

Geez, I am lucky just to be able to afford the one computer I have and it is no where near as good as those mentioned above, however if I could ever afford a +3200 instead of the +2200 I have on this thing then I would have something I think. Oh well, someday.......

Good machine Andre, glad you were able to get it and I know you will be cranking things out in good shape once you get everything over to it. So no excuses on the tardiness of the LNE line now.....right? Hehehe! I am awaiting for that one! smile.gif smile.gif smile.gif wink.gif wink.gif
