I was sittin' in the hole last night, and figured I might be there a spell, so I broke my train to clear a coupl'a crossin's. When would the pro feshnals do it?

If the meet is not imminent (i.e. within minutes), then typically break for the crossing, especially at night.

HOWEVER...

NOT a good idea in this sim where such action MAY send the wrong signal to the oncoming AI and it could stop at the first switch.

Not a problem. I saw the reverse point. Made sure I didn't cross it. AI train went through without any problems. But I am a little confused on RP's as triggers. The first time I ran this activity, I went to the RP, which I thought would trigger the AI train. Instead, it triggered the switch into the siding. Not good unless I wanted a head-on. Not sure how I would've know that.

Well some railroads do not care and the dispatchers will park a train there for several hours with out cutting the crossing. There are other times when the counters and train length is off and the crew pulls into a siding with a crossing accidently blocking it.

Per the FRA, you are only allowed to block it for 10 minutes.
Now there is a descrepancy regarding switching moves over a crossing. Some say that blocking a crossing only starts when the train sits. Others say as soon as the train enters a crossing the timer starts.

Hey guys,

Up here in Canada we are only allowed to block it for 5 minutes.

We start the 5 minute timer when the first car shows up.

If there is no traffic...are you blocking the crossing?? dry.gif

"If there is no traffic...are you blocking the crossing??"

My, deep thought.

Sort of like that old enigma: "If a tree falls in the forest and no one is there to hear it... does it make a sound?"

Or, even more perplexing and unfathomable: "If a man speaks in the forest and there is no woman to hear him, is he still wrong?"

Andre, your asking for trouble on that one. I've learned real quick these two rules in a happy marriage:

#1 Ma'am is always right.
#2 If for some reason she might be wrong...referr to rule #1.

What happens if the crossing is around a bend and you can't see it?
