Hi Erik and all at SLW:

Question on the horn sounds....which engines typically had the K3's and which the P3? Are the Geeps and such in the Roundhouse using these is they did in the prototype or is it necessary to switch horn sounds?

Craig,

This I can tell you...if you want one of these two horns to sound when operating the engines, you will need to manually place them youself. Since they are free most of them use default cabviews and sounds.

As for question 1, I will talk to ssw_96 and ask him, as these horns were taken from his personal home videos.

Thanks Kevin. I forgot about that site

As far as P3's go, most all of SP's units had them. All of their C44-9W's had them. The K3's start showing up on the SP with the arrival of the SD40M-2 from MK, and the SD-70M's. For the early geeps, they had P3's too, but, they were "old cast" P3's. An example of an old cast P3 would be my P3 Horn file availible at SLW.
Even though it was on a C44-9W, it was still an old cast. Railroads tend to "recycle/reuse" horns that are in pretty good shape. Some of the older geeps also had 5 chimes. They were M5's if I am not mistaken. They were commonly found on GP9's in passenger service use. SP's SDP45's also had them too. But kevarc's link should tell you all that you need. My post was regarding SP only.

I generated a list from that site and edited the sms files from the UP PAck and started editing eng file to get the right sounds. You get tired hearing the same horn on every engine.

A compiled list is (more or less) from what I could gather from the site and a couple of other sources:
S3L - ATSF, UP, Milw, Soo, MKT, CNW, KCS, EL, Reading (this is the one with the UP pack), BN
KL5A - CSX, NS, SP, CNW - mostly GE's
P3 - SP. NP, IC, UP SD70M
M3 - DRGW, SP, PRR, D&H, other eastern roads, BNSF & componenets
M5 - WP, Southern, ACL, Seaboard, RF&P, B&O, C&O. SP Passenger, WM cab
P5 - Southern, RI, IC, old NS
S5 - KCS, IC, MKT, N&W, Frisco, Chessie
K5H - NS, CSX
K3H - UP, BNSF
S3K - CR
S5T - L&N, SCL
The Canadians used K3H & K3L - By law in Canada, the horns must sound a D minor chord, so they pretty much sound the same.

Thanks Chad for clearing up the questions.

If I might add on tidbit of info to ssw_96's information....

The 8000 series on SP (not sure of the model, farily late GE's, four-axle) actually had, for some odd reason, Airchime K5H's!! Most of them disappeared rather quickly, and got replaced with P3's.

Im kinda glad they did, they sounded kinda scary at night and were extremely loud, especially when it was cold outside. But about 10 or so still had the K5H's at merger time with the UP. All of the SSW lettered units were B39-8E's and the SP lettered ones were B40-8's.
