I mean... here I was... working on the ES&NA portion of the Ozark Lines extension... and now I'm talking CM???? blink.gif

How does one get from the Ozarks back to the Rockies in such short order?

Well... it is easy if you're MSTS dysfunctional and have MSTS ADHD* like I do!! (*Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) wacko.gif Case in point: A week or so ago, in an email reply from Steve W in response to my showing of my latest accomplishments on the ES&NA extension he said: "You really shouldn't be left alone." laugh.gif

And he's right. I SHOULDN'T be left alone. rolleyes.gif

Well... I gotta' admit... laying 57 miles of track plus towns and stuff in 10 days WAS a bit over the top... but it was fun and that part has been accomplished for when I want to return to it. So... he's sort'a right!

Okay... good enuf'... but HOW did the CM come back into the picture when I was neck deep in the Ozarks????

Pshaw. That answer to that is so obvious any moron should figure it out: Because of my bowels and my bedtime. How obvious.

You see, I have this "habit". No, not the bowel thing, that is "natural", so to speak. The "habit" I'm referring to is that of grabbing my reading glasses and a book (or magazine) when heading off to that special "room" for some intimate time on the Porcelin Throne.

Thus, regally perched thereon, I will then commence reading and browsing whatever happens to be the topic for that "session" as business on the other end is dutifully taken care of. biggrin.gif

SOoooo... now that you understand THAT... it should become easy to make the connection that lately I happen to have been reading CM books when I head for some "quiet time" in the Throne Room.

Oh, that and my bedtime.

Also understand that lately I have been pushing away from the computer about an hour or more before bedtime and (propping up on pillows, reading light on, and a nice litte fan blowing) have been relaxing and reading geniune "books". Books: You know... those squarish thingies with pages of printed matter and pictures therein... those things we used to read before Al Gore invented the Internet.

Needless to say... all this reading of the CM material is re-igniting my creative energy to indulge in that project again.

So, I opened the CM route and looked around. Yup, I accomplished a lot before I stalled on the need for more Victorian era building textures. BUT... with fresh eyes I saw things that need to be addressed:

1. Wonder if the gorgeous prototype area could be improved upon in MSTS by replacing the 30m terrain in use with 10m Seamless?

2. Wonder if my propensity to "overbuild" an area can be addressed by returning to previously built "supporting cast" yard scenes and, through new "eyes', rationalize the areas and remove redundancy to the point of bare necessity? This would help the ol' Object Count and devote more resources to the CM and its operation.

Plus, I must confess: IF I had expended the track laying effort recently spent on the ES&NA Ozark Lines extension on the CM... its track would be 20 miles PAST my target terminal of Florissant!!

That was a bit sobering.

Agreed: Both projects are very different in nature and each caters to an aspect of MSTS route building I enjoy...

* The Ozark Lines appeals to my creative side and allows me to not only incorporate some railroading elements that WERE in the Ozarks, but also to see things that COULD HAVE BEEN, or SHOULD HAVE BEEN in the Ozarks.

* The CM appeals to my historic side and offers to me the opportunity to closely recreate a pivotal historic route and then EXPERIENCE OPERATING over it in virtual form.

Both aspects of MSTS route building are compelling to me.

In addition, I also enjoy the contrasts between the two route enviorns, which is quite pronounced:

* Ozarks: Lush green, tumbled topography, "hillbilly" atmosphere, etc.

* CM: Ultra rugged topography, arid and rocky terrain w/evergreen trees at points, based on as much prototype accuracy as MSTS and my abilities can allow.

Very different animals... very different experiences.

So you see, it's just the nature of this particular beast. (i.e. Me.) I just can't help myself. rolleyes.gif I mean, am I to be blamed it if the fever pendulum is swinging back toward the CM for now?

Of course not.

Soooo...... come along with me and let's enjoy the roller coaster ride together!!! wink.gif

Andre,
That set my feeble mind in motion wacko.gif . There will always be a need for books for me. I can't take the computer to the throne. But then I thought about the guys with laptops. Do you guys take them with you? laugh.gif

Andre:

It's your hobby - we're just along for the ride! I have always liked roller coasters ...

My first reaction to Andre's novella was "TMI"! blush.gif But, and this is the scary part, I started to relate . . . . wacko.gif

Mr. Weaver is correct, we are all along for the ride, and enjoying it!!!!! biggrin.gif biggrin.gif biggrin.gif

TMI, eh? Then I won't go into the gassy side of life. biggrin.gif

BUT...

Return to the CM I have. In fact, since returning to piddle, the following has been accomplished:

* Replaced the 30m SDTS DEM's with NED 1/3 Sec (10m) Seamless terrain. (Worthwhile visual improvement.)

* Replaced the SDTS Distant Mountains with NED Seamless. (Goodbye white slivers/patches.)

* Commenced extending westward from Manitou Springs, over Engleman Trestle, through Manitou Iron Springs (including its small siding), 'round the bend and am poised to re-enter lower Ute Pass and relay track westward.

This isn't like anything I've ever really done before. The mountains/topography is extremely rugged, and the prototype was quite convoluted. Trying to adhere to the prototype alignment as close as practical makes for some very technical track laying.

BUT...

At this point I think I'm a'gonna' stay with the track laying until I reach either reach the town of Divide, or Florissant. (Florissant is on the other side of Ute Pass/Hayden Divide, the foot of the eastbound climb to Divide.) Besides, I don't have the city textures I need to do Colorado Springs at this point... so I might as well use my energy to further the rails. (A future trip to Eureka Springs, Arkansas will hopefully help the texture issue!)

Of course, this "Full Speed Ahead: Lay the rail!" idea can change at the drop of a hat... or more accurately, my Throne Room reading sessions!! rolleyes.gif

Anyhoo... havin' fun.

More later!

You've got all excited! Post pix when you get the urge, please...

Pics? PICS you say??? tongue.gif

Well... 'ya done talked me into it, you silver tongue devil, you! devil.gif

Okay... not much to look at yet... but at least these two Route Editor screens will give you and idea of the ruggedness of Ute Pass.

Be sure to note how closely the track follows the markers... which follow the traces of roadbed in the terrain!

Here's pic 1 of 2:

Okay... one more. This time looking back to the east toward Colorado City and Colorado Springs.

I'm a'tellin' 'ya... this one's gonna' be a dandy. cool.gif

Pray for me that I can make consistent progress! smile.gif

Looking around for sources of textures for historic structures, on Google Earth there's a downloadable Sketchup model of the Colo Spgs roundhouse. Author is easily identified so as to see about the possibilities of texture permissions. The model is of minimal complexity; not important for this purpose.

Unfortunately the model uses modern-day photos for texturing. I see it as vandalism and defacement of an historic structure. Good grief...

Rick:

Good boy... keep at it! (May do you some good? laugh.gif ) Lot's of work to do an' a long ways to go.

Herb:

What 8-pocket coal chute? Is there one of those on the CM? smile.gif

Charlie:

Hey... interesting. "Soon" I'll have to check out the info you mentioned concerning the Colorado City roundhouse. My original thought was to find/shoot appropriate stonework and build my own textures. BUT... I'm striking out on finding similar windows.

HELLO OUT THERE in forum land??? ANYBODY HERE LIVE NEAR COLORADO SPRINGS??? If so... want some FREE VSC products??? biggrin.gif

Charlie:

Wow... gettin' close. If you find some useable textures, hopefully permission can be obtained.

If not... guess a trip to Colorado Springs, eh? biggrin.gif

BREAK TIME UPDATE...

First, lemmee' go get a fresh glass of iced tea....

Okay... back.

Tonight I've been busy continuing to lay rails up Ute Pass. At this point, I'm only THREE MILES from the town of Cascade. I hope to make it to Cascade before bedtime.

This NED Seamless terrain is the berries! There are places where the benches and fills, even some cut work is discernable! And the really cool thing is: The track elevations and alignments match these places! cool.gif

Yup, you read correct: The track is correlating with the detectable terrain features. So far it's turning out real close to the prototype alignments. I REALLY dig this. Of course, there will likely be some areas I'll have to accept compromise... but so far, so good!

Oh... here's two quickie pics from the Route Editor...

Last one for now. See how the rail fits the benches and stuff? Ain't that finer than frog hair? laugh.gif

The Burnett & Cliffton 8-pocket coal chute I sent you the plans for. Abbott P290. And don't forget to make them in two pocket pairs so I can use them on the RGS! laugh.gif

I believe CrisGer at ET lives somewhere around there.
Here's a link to one of his threads. You may get lucky...

Yeehaw! Home already. Early quit!

Happy! Happy! Happy! Joy! Joy! Joy! laugh.gif (Hey, what can I say, summertime is hot.)

Anyway...

Herb:

Okay... I recall now... that RGS skinny rails thing.

Rick:

Thanks for the tip. Maybe you can send CrisGer over this way for a look see?

All:

Welp... didn't make Cascade last night. Bogged down doing some route detective work and didn't have time to return to the Route Editor.

HOWEVER...

Tonight's another night! Cascade or Bust!! rolleyes.gif

TheGrindre
Gawd, I'm glad you made it home alright. I'm dyin' for the next update... laugh.gif

LOL Rick!

We've both got to get a life, huh???? laugh.gif

FWIW:

I'm awaiting a reply from a CM Guru/Smart Guy concerning three locations in Ute Pass I'm uncertain about. Hopefully, he'll shed some light on some questions I asked, and I'll be off n' runnin' again slappin' down track.
