Hi to all,

While working on the Activity Generator template for the route. I have discovered how hard it is with steam engines to climb the Ozarks' 4% grade. Being unsuccessfull with the first three or four attempts with smaller loads, I have restarted, from Mountain Creek, with two locos and 4 fully-loaded BM&E boxcars only. I was able to keep the speed to 13-15 mph with reverser settings to 45 and regulator to 85 (45-85) and reached successfully Fly Gap.

I have restarted this time with 5 BM&E cars and was able to climb with the settings at 40-100 but have been unsuccessfull with six cars. For me it meant to add another steam loco. The locos used here were the #10-13, taking into account the presence of helpers (H*) to assist the player engine.

With three locos, I was finally able to add BM&E cars up to nine (9) BM&E boxcars (close to 590-tons total weight) with three locos and climbed to Fly Gap. Let me know what results you were able to get with the heaviest loads so I may try to get the same results.

Practice and more practice, that is the key word in learning to climb the steep grades. Just imagine in real life situations for those engineers!

I am including some screenshots of the practice runs between Mountain Creek and Fly Gap. Hats off to those steam engineers who had to handle in real life steep grades like them!

Enjoy the shots!

Hi Denis!

It's fun, isn't it! There is SO MUCH MORE to running a steam locomotive than a diesel, both in MSTS and in real life.

Got to ask: You DO have the Version 1a Update installed, don't you? The Version 1a Update addresses some wag file issues that made some of the cars harder to pull than they should be. If you don't know, look in your Ozark route folder for an "ID.txt" file. If it is there, when opened it will inform you that you have Version 1a.

If you do NOT have the Version 1a Update installed, it can be found here:

Keep on having fun!

Hi Andre,

Fun it is indeed! Thanks for the follow up about the upgrade. I remembered in one of the posts here to look for the ID file to determine the version number and it is 1.1. Have purchased it about a week ago.

I have yet to find the good timing and the proper way to use the braking system on. Have tried to do some switching at Mt. Airy but the brakes responded too slowly and ended up in derailing at the end of the Browder Zinc Co. siding. More practice to come...

Hi Again Denis!

You will have to do what we sometimes do on the prototype when switching on steep grades: Use your air sparingly to stop on the grade (i.e. just enough to hold your train in place) and when ready to back DOWNGRADE to spot/whatever... shove against the air. Do NOT release your set! If more air is needed once rolling, you'll have time to set some more. Just DON'T RELEASE IT. You'll learn to manage your air like the pro's in no time!

Nice PIX...

Also - if you haven't already - turn off the AI fireman... I only recently started doing that and it adds a whole new layer to the sim... Having an aux keypad or gaming keyboard helps - as you can program all the fireman buttons in a logical layout...

Scott

A happy new year to everyone!

Really nice pics! This reminds me to take a break
from the Sandy River and run it again :-)
