I've been tinkering with the idea of recreating the YV for RS/RW. I've only got a few miles of track laid (and most of the roads in Merced), but wanted to see what some of the YV structures would look like in the sim. The following are a few work-in-progress shots of a couple of a finished near-finished models (click to enlarge):

Some familiar angles (and a few unusual) of the Merced Depot for RS (still needs a bit more detail, dynamic shadows, and weathering):

That is an excellent object. The detail really stands up under close observation. The hard part will the the weathering and textures to bring out its "character".

Excellent structure/texture work, Marc. Superb, even.

If you continue on to finish the YV, it will be a benchmark route for RS.

That is one hell of a model there Marc. How many polygons? smile.gif
Hack
Thanks! The polys aren't too bad - not for RW, that is, around 7800. Still needs a few small bits, window textures, shadow model and LODs though.

Cheers!

It's been a while since my last post on the subject, so here's a few showing a YV handcar shed and the YV~ATSF crossing (click to enlarge):

Hey Hack any updates on this?
Hack
Nothing yet - I want to get more of the yard finished to present a more complete scene. smile.gif

Marc,

I have been reading Jack Burgess's "Trains to Yosemite" (Signature Press), and you are tackling a very worthy project. This route provides scenery on a par with the Feather River, operational potential that is not obvious to the uninformed (lumber, limestone, mixed freight), passenger trains pulled by 4-4-0's and an era that predates a few of us. And, of course. the YV interchanged with the ATSF and the SP.
The line and structures in Merced, alone--as you have shown with your outstanding modeling--provide "history" that is now long gone. I have a daughter attending UC Merced, and we pass R Street on just about every visit--I had not a clue of what paralleled that street.
Keep it coming! laugh.gif RailWorks provides a perfect platform for 3DTrains' "genius".

Thanks Dave. It was Jack's book, his input, and the drawings he provides on CD, that helped in putting this all together. Still a ways to go yet, especially researching the surrounding neighborhood of Merced. As soon as I can, I'll post trackside shots of the little bits near the depot. smile.gif

Cheers!

MFOS
Marc,

I live in Delhi at present, which is a LONG stone's throw away from Merced, ( I teach/taught in Merced County School District), so let me know what I can do to help.

I finally took the plunge and bought the RW mega bundle, and the other 2 bundles to go along with it, and am still a bit overwhelmed by the differences, etc.

However, I am now current, with the latest simulator. So hopefully, I can finally be of some more use as a Beta Tester, and such.

Peace,

MFOS

Marc is this still in the works?
Hack
Yes, it's still in the works, although I haven't done much since. I did manage to add track to Merced Falls, and also to include the station and court house in Snelling a few weeks ago. I'll post more pics soon.

Cheers!
