Anyone using or tried this for their model RR layouts?

Yep. I used it for my small layout I have pics of on my site. Worked pretty good but it was an older version.

One thing about 3rd planit and I see they are up to version 8. At the time I was working with it, which like I said I had a very early version of it (version 3 I think), I thought it was much more than I needed for track planning. There was something else available at the time that I think most people were using but I can't recall the name of it. I'll try to see if I can find what it was and if it's still even available.

I tried a program called CadRail out of New Mexico I think. At the time, 3rd Planit had the ability to drive the train on the layout I think which made it more advanced but almost the same cost. I believe Cadrail is still available and has advanced thru the years also.

That's the one Craig, appreciate the info. Cadrail was a little bit cheaper back then and I wondered if I wouldn't have been better off using it instead of 3rd Planit. When it came right down to building the layout I wound up making more changes for a variety of reasons and it just seemed to me back then for all the imprecision of building, is a cad approach really that necessary? I mean it's one thing to draw up an easement in a cad program but how do you make that happen when your building the route? So one variance throws off all that planning. So to my thinking it became a issue between planning out the ying yang or just coming up with something on my own (or something that didn't cost as much as 3rd Planit did back then) and letting things happen as they did.
