Full Version: The Zephyr rides the rails again

Over the last few days a crew was readying the Nebraska Zephyr to leave its long time resting place in Minooka, IL. Relco has relocated its operation to Iowa and most of the units have been moved...today the Zephyr is ready and waiting for the "J" to pickup. IT is sitting on heavy duty CN flat cars.
Sadly, I will miss this iconic piece of railroad history. I hope it is restored someday soon. The shots aren't the greatest but they are from my work and I was in a hurry......daylight was fading. My son Scott got a little closer. AN old SW1200 was moving them around......along with a very old Baldwin switcher.

nice to see that it's getting towards completion. And halfway across the country, it's identical twin, the Flying Yankee is almost done, here in New Hampshire. These two train sets paved the way for today's modern passenger trains in the US. For those of you who know of the Zephyr, but not of 'The Yank', please take a look. The only difference between these two beauties is/was the headlight, and the name(s) on the sides...

That is quite a site. Nice to see that being restored.

They just restored the Pioneer Zephyr at Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago a few years ago. Here's the link to check it out; http://www.msichicago.org/exhibit/zephyr/funfacts/index.html
I don't know if you will be able to see any pictures there.

I actually got to see the Pioneer Zephyr at the Museum of Science & Industry back in the year 2004 when I was visiting Chicago while on vacation. I have a digital pic some where. I will try to find it and post it in this forum.
