Live steam railroading isn't always fun and running trains. You have to put some work into 'em too. Yesterday, the 14" Miniature Train Co. G-16 trainset my family maintains that is owned by the local Lions Club decided to throw a driveshaft. What's more aggrivating is that we had just had both trucks out from under it about 3 weeks ago during our regular maintenance preparing for a new season, and made sure everything was tight as possible. My brother took this shot of me in our pit under the locomotive, trying to get the drive shaft back onto the hydraulic motor. Also, another shot as we checked the oil levels in the gearboxes while we had the truck out from under it.

That's only 30 minutes worth of grease on my hands. You should see me after a 6 hour marathon truck rebuild. And yes, the overalls do stand up by themselves in the corner (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)

That's quite a unique skillset that you have! I admire guys who have both the knowledge and patience to maintain historic engines - be they life sized or else working scale models.

Sounds like alot of fun.

If you want to know the meaning of dirty work, try spending 7 hours in the smokebox of this baby!

Jeffrey - The unsuspecting victum of yesterdays work day...8 superheater tubes are now more fit as a fiddel than they were before...yay soot and industrial sealant that resembles something you would find in the labrea tar pits...

Actually, I do.

The MKT engine is subbing for the Cotton Belt engine (which matches the trainset we're running now) which is in for major refurb. unfortunately the Katy cars are scattered amongst the body shop and painter for refurb, so we have a mixed consist.

I'm hoping for things to settle out here a bit, and then get my dad and grandfather and delve back into the Cotton Belt locomotive. I've been working on building power trucks up for it, and it needs a hydraulic pump reworked, and a few other things.

For those that don't know, the Miniature Train Co. G-16's are precise (and I do mean precise) 1/5 scale replicas. I understand that people have blown up the EMD blueprints, and the rivets are perfectly scaled and in the right spot.. That's detail! The cars are generic streamlined coaches, one of which is a "boat tail" round observation car. They were built in the '50's and by changing the wheels could run on either 14, 15 or 16 inch gauge. We run 14" so we're right at 3" scale, give or take a bit.

This one runs around and is owned by a park. We get all the fun and headaches of fixing it and running it, without the pocketbook decrease associated with buying parts and gas (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)
