Here are a few basic terms used on this forum to describe various aspects within Microsoft Train Simulator. Also included are some of the modeling and texturing nomenclature used for games in general. Other glossary items can be found in the MSTS help files, which can be accessed by pressing the F1 key within the game.



ACE - MSTS Texture File
Graphic file format used for MSTS. Graphic files are converted from BMP or TGA file formats to ACE format using the various converters available, such as
TGATools and AceIt.

ACT - Activity Definition File
Defines various parameters within an activity, and can be edited using Windows WordPad.

AE - Activity Editor
Default program used to create and edit activities and consists used in MSTS.

AI - Artificial Intelligence
Term used to describe the behavior of a computer controlled object, such as a train or car.

Alpha
Texture transparency used to allow viewer to "see through" a 3D model.

ASV - Activity Definition File
Defines various parameters within an activity, and is created when using MSTS Activity Editor.

BK - Backup File Extension
Backup file extension applied to various files edited when using MSTS Route Editor.

Bogie
European term used to describe a multi-axle wheel assembly used on a locomotive or piece of rolling stock.

Bitmap
General texture used for a 3D model.

Bumpmap
Texture used to simulate surface properties of a model (bumps), such as brick, rocks, etc.

CVF - Cab View Definition File
Defines parameters used for locomotive cab views.

CON - Consist File
Defines the physical makeup of a trainset.

DAT - Data File
Data files used to define parameters within MSTS, such as track lists, GUI files, etc.

ENG - Locomotive Definition File
Contains information relating to the physics and performance of a locomotive.

ENV - Environment File
Contains information about how the various environments behave within a route, such as sunrise times, sunset times, etc.

FBK - Materials Filter File
Defines materials used within MSTS, such as how alpha channels and other surfaces behave.

GUI - Graphical User Interface
Term used to describe menus and various screens within MSTS.

HAZ - Hazard File
File that defines hazard objects and their reactions when used within MSTS routes, and can be edited using Windows WordPad.

IOM - Input Output Configuration File
Used to define keyboard commands within MSTS.

PAL - Lighting Material Palette
Defines materials and their attributes for objects used within MSTS.

Map
Texture coordinates used for a 3D model.

Mesh
Series of triangles used in a 3D model.

MKR - Route Marker File
Defines coordinates of marker flags used to assist in placing track and roads using MSTS Route Editor.

Microsoft Train Simulator

Normal Map
Similar to bumpmaps, normal maps define how light affects an object's surface.

PAT - Path File
Defines the path a train will take during an activity. Paths are created when editing activities using MSTS Activity Editor.

Patch - Terrain Patch
128m x 128m textured area within a route.

Player
Trains that are in direct control of the player within MSTS.

Poly - Polygon
Individual triangle contained in a in 3D model mesh.

RDB - Road Database File
Road data created when editing a route using MSTS Route Editor.

RE - Route Editor
Default program used to create and edit routes used in MSTS.

REF - Route Shape Reference File
File used to list the objects used when creating a route using MSTS Route Editor.

RIT - Road Information Table
Road data created when editing a route using MSTS Route Editor.

S - Shape File
The physical 3D model object used within MSTS.

SD - Shape Definition File
Contains shape file attributes used for an MSTS shape file.

Sound Region
Defined area that a sound is heard within an MSTS Route.

Skin
Term used when describing locomotive or rolling stock repaints.

SMS - Sound Configuration File
Defines sound parameters used within a route, locomotive, or piece of rolling stock, such as what sound file to play, when to play the sound, etc.

SRV - Activity Service File
Services created when editing activities using MSTS Activity Editor.

TDB - Track Database
Track data file created when editing a route using MSTS Route Editor.

Texture
Graphic image applied to an object, such as the side of a building, the leaves of a tree, etc.

Tile
Series of 16 x 16 terrain patches (2km x 2km) used within an MSTS route.

Tiled
Texture applied x-number of times accross an object's surface.

TIT - Track Information Table
Track data file created when editing a route using MSTS Route Editor.

TRF - Traffic File
Defines computer controlled traffic used in an MSTS route, and is created using the MSTS Activity Editor.

TRK - Route Definition File
Defines general aspects for a route, and can be edited using Windows WordPad.

Truck
American term used to describe a multi-axle wheel assembly used on a locomotive or piece of rolling stock.

Unicode
File formatting used for most MSTS game files. Unicode files must be edited using a program capable of supporting Unicode, such as Windows
WordPad.

Vertex / Vertices
Term used to describe points of a polygon in 3D space. Specifically, a point at which the sides of an angle intersect.

W - World File
Contains information for the placement coordinates of objects used in MSTS routes.

WAG - Rolling Stock Definition File
Contains information relating to the physics and performance of a freight or passenger car.

WS - World Sound Definition File
Coordinates used when placing sound regions using MSTS Route Editor.
